I wait in O’Malley’s for nearly two hours, but Declan doesn’t show. So as the big, mock-antique clock strikes eight I finish the last of my Guinness and step out of Ireland and into the cold April rain of a South London night. It is already dark, and the darkness seems to be seeping through my jacket, soaking into me with the rain.
