Just before private eye Eddie Trench disappeared during a surveillance operation he bought a drink for washed-up cabaret singer Janie Milton. Did he also hand her something valuable? A gang of ruthless smugglers, led by the mysterious psychopath Christer Erlik, seems to think so. Janie turns for help to Richard Walker, the man who employed Trench. But Walker seems more interested in getting his hands on the Crimson Teardrop, a priceless diamond that Erlik was smuggling out of the country. The fact that Walker is also having an affair with Trench’s wife is an added complication. As people are murdered all around her, Janie realises she is in way over her head. Even the police, in the form of DCI Stuart Hodge, cannot be trusted. This is one problem Janie is going to have to sort out on her own . . .
